Three Nigerian students in Malaysia have been arrested by the police for running an
online love scam syndicate which they used to defraud several women of their hard earned money, Malay Online reports.
The young men who are reported to be between 23 and 27 years of age, had setup the scam, line in conjunction with a a Malaysian woman whom they used to launder the money they make from the scam using her bank account.
The four suspects were arrested during a raid by Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Division officers in two separate raids.
Commercial Crimes, Operations and Intelligence Deputy Director, SAC Roslan Abd Wahid, said the woman who is 48 years old, had been involved with the syndicate for a year after she experienced financial difficulties.
"Further investigations led us to the three Nigerian students aged between 23 and 27 at their rented apartment. The trio were studying at a private college in Selangor," Wahid said.
He added that the Nigerian students were responsible for conducting online chats with unsuspecting victims while the woman served as a 'consultant,' and for her efforts, she was paid a commission between 10 to 15 percent from the syndicate, based on the amount they managed to fleece from their victims.
