French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, on Wednesday told Reuters that as part of efforts to completely annihilate the Islamist militants, it would increase its West African counter-insurgency force to support regional forces fighting Boko Haram in the Northeastern part of the country.

However, it was learnt that before now, those troops were tasked with tracking al Qaeda-linked terrorists crossing the Sahara from Mauritania in the west and southern Libya in the east.

“We will slightly increase the numbers on Barkhane,” Le Drian said without giving specific details.

According to him, the troops are expected to provide support to forces fighting around Lake Chad, where Boko Haram has in recent months increasingly threatened regional countries.

Recall that Cameroun, Chad, Niger and Benin have already mobilised forces this year to help Nigeria defeat the Boko Haram insurgency after it captured some towns and carried out cross-border attacks.
