In an effort to curtail the possible spread of Ebola outbreak, the Ogun State government has extended the resumption of schools indefinitely in the metropolis.
Vanguard reports that the announcement was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, by the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Segun Odubela.
The statement explained that the decision was taken as part of efforts to check Ebola virus in accordance with the current global health challenge occasioned by the disease.
It stated that the resumption date for all public and private primary and secondary schools have been postponed till further notice.
The statement noted that the resumption earlier scheduled for September 15, 2014 has been postponed indefinitely.
Reacting to the development, a parent who has three children in a public primary school in Abeokuta, Stella Obawoye, said: “It is a good step and I support it.”
Another parent, Mr. Sylvester Akabogu, also echoed Obawoye, stressing that health officials should be posted to schools whenever the pupils would resume to ensure that no pupil with the EVD was allowed to mix with others.
“I want to suggest that whenever the pupils will resume for the 2014/2015 session, medical personnel should be posted to the schools with the necessary equipment to carry out test on the pupils, in order to detect those who might want to import the deadly virus into the state,” he said.
In a related development, it would be recalled that on August 8, 2014, the Lagos State government directed Churches and Mosques in the state to suspend all crusades and other programmes that will converge huge crowd as part of efforts to check the spread of Ebola disease.
On August 10, 2014, three states comprising Ogun, Oyo and Bayelsa reportedly beefed up security and surveillance to contain the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus from spreading to their areas.
