''Police Officer Beat Me, Encouraged By Others'' - Trader Attacked For Protecting Son

Lagos - A petty trader accused a yet unidentified police officer of assaulting her after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had conducted a raid on drug barons at Akala and Akerele streets.
Mrs. Adesola Johnson says she was battered by a policeman of the Alakara Police Division on Saturday after she allegedly prevented police officers from apprehending her 19-year-old son.
She says at around 8 a.m. on Saturday, she was sitting at her stall on Yuba street when she saw some youths running towards her. As it usually happens when NDLEA agents raid the area, men from Akala street run to Fadeyi and attack "boys" there, under the pretext that it was them who summoned NDLEA.
The men engaged in a free-for-all. However, when policemen from the Alakara Police Division allegedly arrived, upon seeing the representatives of law, the fighting men fled the scene.
Mrs. Johnson narrated that, as the men took to their heels, she saw her son coming back from work. The woman ushered him to her stall, and told to wait until the situation is settled.
The policemen chasing the fighters got to her stall and ordered her son to come out.
The woman says she knew they were going to arrest her son, so she protested. It was then when one of the policemen became angry, took out a "big wire" and begun beating her with it, while his colleagues "encouraged" him.
The execution stopped only when the market leader interfered.
Meanwhile, in a statement by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, it was revealed that over 680kg of drugs were recovered in the raid, and 15 persons arrested.
The NDLEA Lagos Commander, Mr. Aliyu Sule, said that the operation was in response to intelligence report received on the affected locations.
Four vehicles were reportedly vandalised in the fight.
