The Oyo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA), in the last 10 months, arrested 347 suspects in connection with
drug-related offences while 2996.841kilogrammes of cannabis sativa,
14.8 grammes of cocaine, 0.8 grammes of heroin and 3.050 kilogrammes of
psychotropic substances were recovered from them.
Also, the agency has succeeded in the conviction of 36 suspects within the same period under review.
This
was disclosed, on Monday, by the state commander of the agency, Mrs
Omolade Faboyede, at the NDLEA office in Ibadan while parading four
arrested suspects and the illicit drugs found with them before newsmen.
Decrying
the persistence of some suspects in their involvement in peddling the
banned drugs, the commander spoke on the case of one of the suspects,
Kafayat Blessing Ibrahim, a 26-year-old female who claimed to be a
student and had once been convicted after she was arrested on November
25, 2011 with 40kg of cannabis sativa.
The commander said the
lady went back to the drug business after serving her prison sentence
and was rearrested in Ogbomoso on July 9, 2013 with 16kg of cannabis
sativa.
Mrs Omolade also pointed at another suspect, Abass
Adeyinka, a butcher, whom she described as a notorious drug baron at
Beere area of Ibadan, which is perceived as the den of drug peddlers and
users in the ancient city.
