PLANS by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to woo some last minute voters with bags of Goodluck Jonathan rice turned sour this morning as a trailer carrying the cargo crashed spilling its contents in the Osun State capital Oshogbo.
Known in local parlance as stomach infrastructure, the distribution of essential items to voters during elections has become a feature of Nigerian democracy. Food items like rice, yam, bread, cooking oil and gari are always shared out to voters by the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win votes.
Such food items are always specially packaged in bags which feature the portraits of the candidates and are given out for free at community centres. This morning, the PDP was hoping to attract some last minute votes with its trailer load of rice but unfortunately, it crashed in Oshogbo, injuring the driver badly.
Packaged as Goodluck Rice and featuring the portraits of the president and vice president, the cargo bore the green, yellow and red colours of the PDP. It is not clear what will happen to the consignment now.
