But the La Liga champions have confirmed that Diego Godin’s nasal fracture does not require surgery following subsequent medical check-up.

Atletico said in a statement: “The player (Koke) suffered a torn hamstring in the back part of his left leg.”

Uruguayan centre-back Godin suffered a broken nose just 8 minutes into the game following an elbow from Sami Khedira. After being attended to by the medical staff on the pitch he continued until the end of the game.

Spain international Koke, 23, was replaced by 20-year-old Saul Niguel, who went on to score a beautiful overhead-kick and set up Atleti’s third goal by Antoine Griezeman. Saul also injured himself in the process of finding Griezeman but scans have ruled out any serious damage.

Koke will miss the Uefa Champions League first leg clash with Bayer Leverkusen this month and could be sidelined from league matches against Sevilla and Valencia.

The victory pulled Atletico within four points of their capital neighbors, and level with Barcelona, who play their game in hand later on Sunday at Athletic Bilbao.
