Three police officers sentenced to two years in jail each for abandoning duty posts for party food

THREE policemen from the Lagos State Police Command have been jailed for two years each for abandoning their duty posts and dashing off to eat free food which was laced with drugs and knocked them unconscious.

In a bizarre incident, Sergeant Felix Okwa, 47, Corporal Ogu Romanus, 46, and Constable Sunday Okoh, 34, attached to the Ishashi Police Division were all found guilty. Sentenced yesterday by Magistrate Demi-Ajayi of the Ebute-Metta Magistrate’s Court, they were found guilty of dereliction of duty and negligence.

On patrol, they were said to have received a call at around 11.30pm, from man named Kezzy, who invited them for supper at the Regional Hotel, also in Ishashi, claiming he wanted to reward them for a job they did for him. Unknown to them, Kezzy fed them with food laced with drugs, after which they slept off and their weapons, three AK-47 rifles and 90 live rounds of ammunition were stolen.

After they well unconscious, the hotel manager reported the matter at the Ishashi Police Station after which all three were arrested and later charged to court. Having being found guilty, apart from being jailed for two years, they will also serve a six-month community service after completing their jail terms.
