THE British Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
the Kogi State government on the training and retraining of 630
teachers.
Already, the state government has directed the
selection of some teachers of higher institutions in the state to serve
as observers and be part of the training programme in content language
development.
While signing the MoU, the state governor, Captain
Idris Wada, said there was need to train teachers in content language
development and increase the inability of the teachers to comprehend
the use of English Language.
The governor, who was represented
by Professor Olugbemiro Jegede, the Secretary to the State Government,
said the training would place emphasis on content knowledge, pedagogical
knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, adding that it became
difficult to impact knowledge when a teacher cannot comprehend the use
of the right terminology in teaching.
While describing education
as the centre piece of his administration, Wada, assured that no stone
would be left unturned in providing the right environment for teaching
and learning in the state.
He commended the British Council for
accepting the request to upgrade language laboratories in schools across
the state, just as he solicited other partnership support from the
council in moving the state forward.
The Deputy Director,
British Council in charge of training of teachers, Amir Ramzan
commended the commitment of the Kogi State government to improving
teachers.
He disclosed that the plan to improve level of teachers
in the state would assist greatly in improving the quality of teaching
and learning.
The Special Adviser on Strategic Planning, Mr Dayo
Akande said the training of teachers in the state was a reaffirmation of
the present administration’s stand on education.
